Areas of Sheppey were made a lot cleaner during a week in August
2011 by Catch-22 managing
to fill 52 bags of litter in aid of the Big Clean-Up
campaign.
The Big Clean-Up, which took place during August 2011 in
Sittingbourne and Sheppey, was a campaign set up by Mr Henderson in
partnership with local charity Litter Angels and Keep Britain
Tidy's Love Where You Live campaign. The aim was for individuals
and local groups to commit to at least one clean-up project.
Nine volunteers from Catch-22, a charity which helps young people
from tough backgrounds to gain confidence and skills and give back
to their local community, racked up 30 hours worth of volunteering
in association with the National Citizen Service, a Government
pilot, which took place over the summer 2011.
Mr Henderson said,
"I am so pleased with the young people from Catch-22 for putting so
much effort into making a difference in our community by taking
part in our Big Clean Up. They all worked really hard and did a
fantastic job.
"Catch-22 and the National Citizen Service are excellent schemes
that I would recommend to any young person in my constituency of
Sittingbourne and Sheppey who want to gain new skills, meet new
people and make a difference in the area where they live."
Johnny Soutan, Team Leader of the NCS project said,
"All the volunteers worked really hard to clean up each area and I
am very proud of them all."
The nine volunteers were Sian Goatham, Nicole Crellin, Charlotte
Crellin, Brendon Cordingley, Dylan Friday, Deano Farrer, Charlie
Vaughan and Maddie Hartwright.
Catch-22 cleared up the following areas in Sheerness:
* Tuesday - Sheerness Canal from Halfway to
Bartons Point - 14 bags
* Wednesday - Sheerness Dyke, near Tesco - 22
bags
* Thursday - New Road Park, Sheerness - 8
bags
* Friday - Ship On Shore, Sheerness - 8
bags
Johnny Soutan also said "The NCS programme will be running next
year and we plan to do the 'Big Clean Up' throughout 4 areas of
Kent, Sheerness, Canterbury, Folkestone and Maidstone. We all look
forward to completing the NCS programme for next year!"
